So if I have a friend who uses another email provider like, aol or hotmail, can I send an invitation to them and have them communicate back, using instant messenger?
If I already have Yahoo IM, can I invite a non yahoo member to be my "friend" so we can instant message?
No, they must have a yahoo id (ie yahooid@yahoo.com) to use Yahoo's IM service. Tell them to sign up for a free account, and just use it to mesasage you. They will have to download Yahoo Messenger too though, so make sure they are willing to do that before they sign up for an account. :-)

You cannot message someone using Yahoo! Messenger, unless they are using Yahoo! Messenger.
However, you can email them from your email program, asking them to download Yahoo! Messenger and get an account, it does not matter who they have their Internet or Email with.
Reply:You can if you have Trillian. It lets people with one type of messenger communicate with people that have other types of messengers.
